St. Vincent de Paul Society

St. Vincent de Paul Society – Houston/Galveston

5356 11th St, Katy, TX 77493

(281)-391-1540

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international Catholic organization that provides a wide variety of charitable services to serve the poor and those in need. One of the Society’s most important tenets is that “no work of charity is foreign to the Society.” Because of this, they are engaged in almost every type of charity service that exists. Across the US and the world, they provide “disaster relief services, job training and placement, thrift stores, food pantries, housing programs, prison reentry, medical services, and many others, always seeking longer-term pathways out of poverty and towards the full flourishing of every person.”

The society has over 100,000 members across the country, all of which are engaged in their cause, helping to lift up the poor and needy. You can help support their cause with a financial donation on their website, or you can volunteer to assist with their home visits, in which you’ll visit families in need and help provide food, clothing, rent assistance, and a cheerful smiling face. On their website, you can also find more information about volunteering, as well as information about donating clothing, furniture, and other lightly used household items to their resale store.

Katy Christian Ministries provides social services, counseling, basic necessities, and other resources in times of crisis to families in Katy and West Houston who need it. They’re a BBB accredited charity and have been working to serve the people of Katy since 1984. Katy is a non-denominational organization and helps members of any faith or no faith at all. They do not require participation in any religious activities to be eligible for their services, as they believe that Christians should love and support all, not just those who share their beliefs.

You can donate items at either of the Katy Christian Ministries resale store locations listed above between 9 am and 5 pm Monday through Saturday. Over 40% of the ministry’s total funding comes from their profits at the resale stores, so by donating or shopping there you’re helping fund their mission and in turn, helping the disadvantaged people of Katy and the Houston area. If you are interested in helping the resale stores be successful and run effectively, you can put in an application on their volunteer page. The organization also accepts volunteers to help out at their food pantry, social services department, their community garden, and many of their other programs.

Clothed by Faith is another non-profit local to Katy. They work together with other local and regional charitable organizations to provide clean clothing to families in need. One organization they partner with is Closets for Schools, a Houston-based charity also focused on providing clothing to the needy. In partnership, these two organizations help impoverished children by giving each individual a minimum of one week’s worth of clothing, shoes, and undergarments. The partnership between Clothed by Faith and Closets for Schools serves all K-12 students in Houston and the surrounding cities, where their open closets let students in need choose clothes that they love and will feel dignified in.

Clothed by Faith’s mission relies on the donation of gently used clothing by generous members of the community. You can donate any of your new or used clothing in good condition at either of their branch locations listed above or at any of their donation bins across Katy and the surrounding areas. They’re also in the process of opening another branch on Pine Drive in Dickinson.

Joe Joe Bear Foundation

(281)-398-4522

The Joe Joe Bear Foundation serves children and families nationwide by providing teddy bears to children who are in the hospital with life-threatening illnesses. The foundation was created in memory of Joseph David Ordaz, who passed away on March 10, 2009, from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. During his time in the hospital, Joe was saddened to hear the cries of sick children and said he wished he could do something to help them feel comforted.

The Joe Joe Bear Foundation gratefully accepts cash donations through their website. For every $5 they receive they’re able to donate a teddy bear to a sick child, and they’ve so far donated nearly 2400 of these teddy bears. Every year the foundation also hosts a golf tournament and a race called “The Great Bear Chase.” The proceeds from both of these events also go towards purchasing teddy bears for sick children.
