Young Life is a worldwide Christian ministry that reaches out to students from middle school to college and helps them develop their faith and develop the skills and abilities they’ll need to succeed in life. Young Life is present in over 100 countries across the globe, and their Fort Bend chapter in Sugar Land has special programs to provide aid and support to teen moms, youth with disabilities, and other young people who are struggling.

To help aid Young Life and the young people it supports you can make a donation on their website. In donating you can help send a student to Young Life’s summer camp where they’ll learn life skills and deepen their connection to other youth and their faith.

Goodwill has one dedicated donation center and two retail stores in Sugar Land, all of which accept donations of gently used clothes, shoes, furniture, home decor, and much more. The address for the Donation Center on Lexington Boulevard is listed above, they’re open to take your donations from 8 am to 6 pm seven days a week. The Goodwill locations in Sugar Land are owned by Goodwill Houston, which partners with College HUNKS and the TaskRabbit app to make having your donation picked up and delivered to the store for a small fee possible.

Goodwill hosts trainings and events to help educate people with barriers to employment, and they employ hundreds of thousands of people nationwide at their 3,200+ retail stores. Goodwill helps people lift themselves up to improve their lives and also improve our nation’s workforce. The proceeds from their retail stores go towards paying these employees who are choosing to lift themselves out of poverty or tough situations.

Fort Bend Cares is a local non-profit whose mission is “to provide Fort Bend County community non-profits with resources to meet the needs of disadvantaged children.” Since it was founded in 2004, Fort Bend Cares has served tens of thousands of children in Fort Bend County and awarded over $2.1 million in charitable grants. In 2019 and 2020 alone, the organization impacted 18,500 children by serving 17 local non-profits and giving out over $100,000 in charitable grants.

Fort Bend Cares is able to accomplish their mission through donations from individuals and small businesses, corporate donations, and profits from their auction sales. It’s no surprise that The Salvation Army has a location in Sugar Land, as they operate over 8000 donation centers and thrift stores in 130 different countries across the world. Salvation Army accepts donations of virtually anything in good condition, from clothing and shoes to large furniture and vehicles. The Salvation Army is one of the world’s largest charitable organizations, and proceeds from their thrift stores, as well as cash donations, go towards funding their adult rehabilitation programs, prison ministries, veterans affairs services, elderly services, assistance in missing person cases, and combatting human trafficking all over the world.

You can bring your donations to the Salvation Army retail store and donation center listed above or in certain areas of Sugar Land you can have your donation picked up. If you live within the 77478, 77479, or 77498 zip codes, you can have your donation picked up from your home by visiting SATruck.org. If you live in the 77487 or 77496 zip codes, however, you’re unable to schedule a donation pickup on the Salvation Army website so you’ll need to call their phone number listed above or arrange for an outside party to deliver your donation.

Habitat for Humanity is another well-known charity worldwide that operates an office and many services in Sugar Land and Fort Bend county. They believe that everyone deserves a decent place to live, and they seek to make that happen through home construction, home repair for the elderly, disaster response teams across the globe, and other programs. Their leading goal is to focus on shelter first, which they do by employing those in need and volunteers to build homes, which are provided to the homeless at low cost to help people who are underprivileged or impoverished climb up and establish a better life for themselves.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores are donation centers and home improvement stores that sell new and used building materials, furniture, appliances, home decor and more for a very affordable price. You can donate any of these things at the ReStore location listed above, and the proceeds go towards helping build affordable housing for the needy in Fort Bend County. the donation center is open from 10 am to 6 pm Wednesday through Saturday, and from 1 pm to 5 pm on Tuesdays. If you have an old car you no longer use, Habitat for Humanity will also accept it as a donation, and the proceeds from the sale of those will again go towards solidifying and furthering their mission.
